| Notes: |
Among the Wythe County Petitions filed at the Virginia
State Library is one from Michael Kinser, who was called on
to perform the duties of a soldier for eighteen months. While in
service in the company of Captain Bently and in the regiment of
Colonel Harris at the second battle of Camden he states that
"he was cut to pieces and taken prisoner by the enemy."
While he was a prisoner he "was plundered by the British
soldiers of his money and a Tobacco note which had been given to him
on the part of the Government of Virginia in consideration of his
services." He had lost the evidence of the debt due but was
requesting the Virginia Assembly to reimburse him. He went on to
state that although he was receiving a pension of $40 annually it
was "very inadequate compensation for 5 sword cuts on his head,
the disability of his left arm and one of the fingers of his left
hand and the entire loss of three of the fingers on his right
hand." He adds that he was the father of nine children. His
claim was rejected but a note on the reverse of the petition states
"enquire about land bounty." Perhaps they thought he could
be reimbursed in this way instead. (From Kegley and Kegley) |
