Iraq

Sgt. William Scott Kinzer Jr.

Every death leaves questions that may never be answered. When the death  is a 27-year-old with his life ahead of him, in a war itself that sometimes seems to offer more questions than answers, it's especially hard. Such is the case with Sgt. William Scott Kinzer Jr. of Hendersonville, NC. Kinzer, with the 1st Squadron of the 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, died in Ad Duluiyah, Iraq,  as a result of injuries he suffered when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his patrol.

He is the fourth serviceman with connections to the area to die in the current conflict in Iraq. Each leaves behind a hole in families and communities that can't be filled. Each will be missed.

Kinzer attended Fletcher Academy on Howard Gap Road. He was described by a former classmate as a wonderful, kind person. If he was given a job to do, he always did it to the best of his abilities.

"We're all just shocked that someone so young, someone who's part of our group, had died."

This war, like all wars, will end some day. When that day comes, we will look across the safe gulf of time and be able to dissect what was done right, what was done wrong. Historians will be able to parse out the important events and package it all to make sense.

We look forward to that day. For now, we are stuck with questions, and the family and friends are coping with loss. They are in our thoughts and prayers.
